Young Syrian Demonstrates to Friends the Art of Ordering Nasi Lemak from Mak Cik in Malay
Recently, a Syrian student caught the attention of TikTok users as he shared a crucial tip on how to adeptly order Nasi Lemak from a Mak Cik at a roadside stall (whom he referred to as a supermarket). In his brief video, he effortlessly demonstrated the pronunciation and tone Malaysians use when placing an order.
Instead of the common inquiry, "Makcik, itu berapa? (Makcik, how much is that?)," he emphasized the correct tone, saying, "Makcik berapa tuuuuu? (Makcik, how much is that?)" with a touch of flair.
To add a touch of local flavor, he included the well-known phrase "Why is it so expensive," highlighting our inclination for a good deal.
His video prompted reflections from viewers, with some expressing surprise at the distinct intonation of Malaysian speech. One comment revealed, "I have been speaking Malay for the longest time. I can’t believe that’s how I sound," while another user remarked on how foreigners can discern these nuances.
