Videos Capture Fire Destroying Iconic Furniture Store Near LDP

Videos of a fire engulfing the Plaza Perabot LDP furniture store, located next to the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP) on Jalan SS8/7 in Petaling Jaya, went viral on social media over the weekend.

According to the New Straits Times, the fire and rescue department received a distress call at 10:46 p.m. on Friday, 4 October. Footage circulated online showing the blaze consuming most of the two-storey building, which covered approximately 20,000 square feet — the size of over 22 badminton courts.

In one 35-second clip, recorded by a driver at the scene, two lanes heading toward Puchong on the LDP were seen being blocked off to keep a safe distance from the fire. The person recording remarked on feeling the heat from inside their car, saying, "Woah, I can feel the heat here. My forehead is hurting."

Another 21-second video, taken from an aerial view, showed that most of the building’s roof had collapsed due to the fire.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Wan Razali Wan Ismail reported that 90% of the building was destroyed. Firefighters from six stations—Petaling Jaya, Damansara, Penchala, Puchong, Subang Jaya, and Serdang—were dispatched to battle the blaze.

"The fire was brought under control by around 11:30 p.m. and fully extinguished within three hours," Wan Razali stated, adding that efforts to extinguish hot spots and begin recovery continued until the morning of Saturday, 5 October. A witness said that they saw firefighters still working on-site that Saturday.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and the fire forensic unit is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Plaza Perabot LDP, according to its Facebook page, housed 16 retailers offering products such as sofas, carpets, bedroom sets, mattresses, kitchen cabinets, and office furniture. The large furniture mall was a notable landmark for LDP commuters and Petaling Jaya locals.

Many netizens have compared this incident to a similar fire in November 2018, which destroyed a 1,000-square-foot furniture mall in Puchong.
