Thousands of Pets Perish in Chatuchak Shop Fire
A fire erupted in Chatuchak market early Tuesday morning, June 11, likely killing thousands of pet animals.
The blaze began at 4:10 a.m. in the market's pet zone, affecting 118 shops.
Firefighters, who arrived promptly, managed to extinguish the fire within 30 to 60 minutes, as reported by the Bangkok Post.
Thai media sources stated that vendors reported losing over 1,000 animals, including rabbits, fish, dogs, cats, birds, monkeys, snakes, and chickens, all trapped in cages.
The animals were reportedly crying out in distress during the fire.
No human injuries were reported.
A security guard at a bird shop mentioned that the fire started while she was caring for rare birds on the mezzanine floor.
The Nation reported that she heard the animals' cries but had to run outside due to difficulty breathing.
Among the animals lost were valuable cockatoos, each worth 30,000 baht (RM3,800).
Initial investigations suggest that an electrical fault caused the fire, according to police Superintendent Phuwadon Ounpho, as reported by Reuters.
