'They Don’t Ask You to Drink’ – Malay Parents Defend Chinese School Events Sponsored by Beer Companies
A Chinese school in Selangor recently drew attention for receiving sponsorship from a beer company. The Ministry of Education announced an investigation into the matter, while PAS expressed its opposition to accepting sponsorships from alcohol companies.
In a report by China Press, some Malay parents with children in Chinese schools defended the sponsorship, stating they saw no issue with it.
“They were just sponsoring an event, not asking anyone to drink the beer,” one parent remarked.
A mother with a child attending a Chinese school in Selangor said she wasn’t concerned about the controversy over the beer logo displayed during a school performance.
“If the funds from beer companies are used to improve school facilities, I have no problem with that,” she said.
Another parent, Zarina, who sends her daughter to a Chinese school in Ipoh, emphasized that she prioritizes the quality of education over such controversies.
“When she masters a third language and adapts to the culture of vernacular schools, I’m confident she’ll have a bright future,” Zarina added.
Regarding sponsorship from alcohol companies, Zarina stated she isn’t bothered by the controversy, as long as one condition is met.
“As long as the charity event sponsored by beer companies doesn’t involve children or Muslims, I see no issue with it,” she explained.
Another parent also supported the idea of accepting funds from beer companies for Chinese schools, noting that she has never seen Chinese schools promoting beer products.
“It doesn’t matter to me. The funds raised from the charity show will go to a good cause, and they’re not asking anyone to drink the beer,” she said.
