‘Teh Tarik Has No Sugar’ – Malaysian Highlights Sugar Content in Drinks, Netizens Argue Condensed Milk Isn’t Sugar

Sugary treats are a guilty pleasure for many. Enjoying sweets occasionally isn’t harmful, but overindulgence can lead to serious health issues like diabetes—and in severe cases, even leg amputation.

In a viral TikTok post, Malaysian personal trainer @rexfitness_ shared how much sugar is in a typical 250ml glass of Teh Tarik from a Mamak restaurant. Rex estimated it contained around 39 grams of sugar, shedding light on the top three sugary drinks commonly ordered at Mamaks.

To drive home his point, Rex even used a measuring scale to show his followers just how much 39 grams of sugar looks like—it’s a significant amount for one beverage.

"I didn’t know they put sugar in Teh Tarik!"

Some social media users were surprised by Rex’s revelation, noting that Teh Tarik is made with condensed milk, which is already loaded with sugar.

"Teh Tarik is made with condensed milk, not added sugar," commented one user.

"Condensed milk has no sugar, smart-ass," wrote another.

Public Health Malaysia has also issued warnings about Teh Tarik, pointing out that the condensed milk used in it contains over 40% sugar and palm oil, posing health risks.

"Drinking a cup of Teh Tarik is like consuming multiple teaspoons of sugar. Regularly drinking it can lead to obesity, tooth decay, diabetes, and heart disease."
