Singapore declines hosting role, dealing fresh blow to Commonwealth Games
Singapore, following Malaysia's lead, has declined the opportunity to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, casting further uncertainty over the fate of the multi-sport event.
After the withdrawal of the Australian state of Victoria last year due to escalating costs, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has been scrambling to secure a new host. Despite offering a £100 million (RM598 million) incentive, Malaysia rejected the chance to step in last month, citing financial concerns.
"Commonwealth Games Singapore and Sport Singapore have assessed the feasibility of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games and have opted not to pursue a bid," stated the two sports bodies in a joint statement, offering no further details.
Victoria's abrupt withdrawal and the absence of a clear alternative have raised questions about the Games' future, traditionally held every four years, with participating teams primarily originating from former British colonies. The most recent Games were hosted by Birmingham, England in 2022.
The CGF remains hopeful that the Games' emphasis on inclusivity and integration, combining para sports with able-bodied events, will attract a host despite the looming deadline.
Katie Sadleir, CEO of the CGF, acknowledges the urgency of the situation but asserts that significant efforts are underway to secure a host for the 2026 Games.
