Significant Milestone: Google Begins Development on Its First RM8.3 Billion Data Center in Malaysia!
Google has reaffirmed its commitment to Southeast Asia by commencing construction on its first data center and cloud region in Malaysia, following an investment announcement made in May 2024.
The US$2 billion (approximately RM8.3 billion) investment marks a significant milestone for the tech giant, reflecting its confidence in Malaysia’s rapidly growing digital ecosystem.
The data center, located in Selangor’s Elmina Business Park, is expected to boost the economy, create jobs, and drive innovation, according to W.Media. Google's initiative aims to support Malaysia's increasing demand for cloud services and AI, helping businesses and organizations achieve their digital objectives.
In addition to economic benefits, Google is dedicated to supporting local communities and the environment. They have partnered with the Global Environment Centre (GEC) and the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to restore Taman Aman Lake as part of their efforts to safeguard local water resources.
Expanding its reach in Southeast Asia, Google is also collaborating with UNICEF Malaysia, CelcomDigi, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, and Arus Academy to launch the "Future Skills for All" program in Selangor, with support from the Ministry of Education. This initiative aims to reduce inequalities and provide children from diverse backgrounds access to critical future-ready skills.
Google also recently announced a substantial investment of 36 billion Thai baht (approximately RM4.68 billion) to establish a new data center and expand cloud services in Thailand.
