Outrage in Malaysia as Calls for Action Intensify After Discovery of Pit Filled with Dead Stray Dogs and Puppies in Perak
Last month, public outrage erupted after authorities from a local council in Terengganu shot a stray dog named Kopi.
Now, a similar incident has gone viral, showing the disturbing deaths of multiple stray dogs. According to the New Straits Times, a former Manjung council member recently discovered dozens of dog carcasses, along with live puppies, abandoned in a pit in Sitiawan, Perak, allegedly after being captured and shot by local council officers.
The former council member shared videos revealing the grim scene: dogs, some still wearing collars, trapped in a pit approximately four feet deep at a garbage disposal site. The footage captures the heart-wrenching sounds of puppies crying, unable to escape and left among both fresh and decomposing bodies.
Some dogs appeared to have been there for a while, with additional carcasses recently dumped on top.
The incident has also brought to light a troubling practice by some councils, where stray dogs are shot in remote areas and then buried in mass graves.
An animal activist, who recognized some of the dogs in the video, said he had been caring for them over the past three days while awaiting their owner’s return to collect them.
So far, the Manjung Municipal Council has yet to release a statement on the matter.
In response, Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia has called for a standardized national procedure on how local councils should handle stray dogs across the country.
