18-Year-Old Teen in Penang Dies from Electrocution While Charging Smartphone on Express Bus
A tragic incident occurred in Butterworth, Penang, where a teenager died from electrocution while charging his smartphone using a socket onboard an express bus at the Penang Sentral terminal.
The event took place around 7:40 p.m. on November 1, involving 18-year-old Mohamad Nur Asymawi, who was on the bus preparing to depart for Kuala Lumpur.
Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman, as reported by Harian Metro, stated that the incident was first noticed by fellow passengers and subsequently reported to the police by the 36-year-old bus driver.
Preliminary investigations revealed burn marks on the victim’s left fingers, believed to have resulted from the electrocution. Additionally, the charging cables were found melted, and the smartphone was noted to be hot.
Anuar explained, “The bus driver mentioned that the victim boarded the bus bound for KL Sentral at around 6 p.m. About 10 minutes later, a passenger informed him that the victim had screamed and was found foaming at the mouth. The driver immediately called an ambulance, but the medical officer confirmed the victim's death upon arrival.”
The case has been categorized as sudden death, and an autopsy conducted at Hospital Seberang Jaya (HSJ) confirmed electrocution as the cause of death.
