"Mulan Has Departed" – Outdated Movie Poster at Merdeka MRT Station Removed After 4 Years
If you frequently drive or take public transportation in and around Kuala Lumpur, you might notice billboards advertising products that no longer exist or promoting events that have long ended.
One of the most obvious examples of this was the large posters at Merdeka MRT station advertising the 2020 live-action Disney film Mulan.
Public Complaint Leads to Action After four long years, following numerous complaints from the public about the outdated movie poster, the MRT station’s management finally took them down. The issue gained widespread attention after a viral social media post.
On 1 July, @RakyatAduan on X (formerly Twitter) highlighted the outdated Mulan poster, tagging @MRTMalaysia and @askrapidkl for clarification. The post emphasized that keeping the old poster meant the station had lost four years of potential advertising revenue, which could have been used to improve facilities.
Prompt Response and Removal The post went viral, garnering 1 million views and over 5,300 likes. @askrapidkl quickly responded, assuring that the asset owner would remove outdated posters at MRT stations in stages.
True to their word, just five days later, Malaysians spotted the Mulan live-action film poster being taken down. X user @xatyrosdi shared a video and photo of the poster’s removal at Merdeka MRT station.
Additionally, @xatyrosdi reposted a photo of another outdated movie poster being removed from Bukit Bintang MRT station. This time, it was a poster for the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
