Malaysians Traveling to the UK Will Need to Apply for ETAs Starting January 2025
Starting 8 January next year, Malaysians traveling to or transiting through the UK will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
According to the New Straits Times, the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur stated that the ETA is a digital permit for short-term visitors who currently do not need a visa or have UK immigration status before their trip.
The High Commission noted that by April 2025, all visitors from visa-exempt countries will need an ETA to enter the UK.
"The ETA aligns with similar measures taken by other countries, such as the US and Australia, to enhance border security. It will help create a more efficient, digital immigration system that is quicker and more secure for the millions who cross the UK border each year," the British High Commission explained.
The ETA has been gradually rolled out to various countries worldwide since November 2023.
Malaysians can begin applying for an ETA from 27 November 2024 for travel to the UK starting 8 January 2025.
The British High Commission said the application process is straightforward and can be completed on the GOV.UK website, with decisions typically made within three working days. Faster decisions may be available through the UK ETA app.
The ETA costs £10 (approximately RM56) and is valid for two years or until the holder’s passport expires, allowing multiple entries into the UK for stays of up to six months each time.
If a new passport is issued, a new ETA will be required.
