Anthony Loke: Malaysian Drivers Might Need to Pay for Physical Driving License Cards Starting Next Year
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Reaffirms Digital Driving Licenses but Offers Option for Physical Cards at a Cost Starting Next Year
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook reiterated today that the government will continue implementing digital driving licenses and road tax services in Malaysia, with no plans to reverse the initiative. While users can still opt to print physical copies, the primary focus remains on digital adoption.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Loke announced that starting next year, the Ministry of Transport will introduce an option for drivers to obtain a physical driving license card. However, this will come at an additional cost for users.
MyJPJ App’s Impact and Revenue
Addressing a question by Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh regarding the effectiveness and cost savings of going digital, Loke revealed that the MyJPJ app has been downloaded by 13.7 million users since its launch two years ago. Of these, 10.7 million users have registered for JPJeID, making MyJPJ a widely used platform with over 10 million active users.
As of October 31, 2024, the app has generated nearly RM121 million in revenue from users renewing road tax and driving licenses digitally. Loke praised the system for its efficiency and the savings achieved by eliminating the need to print physical licenses.
Public Demand for Physical Cards
Despite the success of the digital initiative, Loke acknowledged complaints from some members of the public who still prefer physical driving licenses and road tax documents. To address this, the ministry plans to introduce an initiative early next year allowing those who want a physical license card to request one for a fee.
“Early next year, we will announce an initiative for anyone or any parties who want to print their physical driving license. They may have to pay for the printing of the physical cards,” Loke said.
Details regarding the cost and process of obtaining the physical card have yet to be announced.
