Malaysian Woman Discovers Secret Camera Inside Dehumidifier Box in Bathroom of Penang Homestay
The concept of homestays has transformed the way we approach travel, providing opportunities to discover unique destinations and immerse ourselves in local culture. However, reports of hosts installing covert cameras have made travelers more cautious when booking such accommodations.
In a recent TikTok video posted by user @i.njw, she recounts a harrowing experience she and her friends endured during a trip to Penang for three days and two nights.
Ain described how they initially noticed a seemingly random dehumidifier box in the bathroom on the first day of their homestay. Initially, they didn't pay much attention to it.
However, on the second day, upon returning from a swim around 7:30 pm, one of Ain’s friends made a startling discovery while showering – a hidden camera in the bathroom. She screamed to alert Ain and their other friend about the alarming situation.
According to Ain’s friend, she noticed something reflective on the dehumidifier box while showering, and upon closer inspection, observed a small aperture.
"To verify her suspicion, my friend decided to inspect the box. After emptying its contents, she immediately spotted the camera, which was active and displayed 'Ready to connect/connected to wifi,'" Ain shared. When they examined the camera, it appeared switched off but still warm. Worried about potential remote access, they removed its batteries.
"While we were preparing to depart, an Indian man arrived to check on us. He took possession of the camera, claiming it was for investigative purposes."
Upon checkout, they proceeded directly to the police station. Although the police summoned the man, he arrived without the camera. The authorities insisted he retrieve it.
"We were asked to examine the camera, but the SD card was missing," Ain disclosed. "The police recommended filing a report and indicated they would investigate it as a case of sexual harassment if significant developments arose."
"We hope that by sharing our ordeal, a thorough investigation will be conducted to apprehend the perpetrator and raise awareness," Ain concluded.
