Malaysian Football Enthusiast Sacrifices Motorcycle to Attend Malaysia vs. South Korea Match at Asian Cup in Qatar
For ardent sports enthusiasts, demonstrating unwavering support for their team often entails making significant financial sacrifices. Such was the case for a Malaysian football fan who recently garnered attention for his extreme devotion to the national team. Reports emerged that he went as far as selling his motorcycle to afford a ticket to witness Malaysia's match against South Korea at the Asian Cup in Qatar.
Identified as Derrick Gan from Melaka, this fervent supporter's passionate reaction to Malaysia taking a 2-1 lead over South Korea caught the spotlight, as shared in a Facebook post by GTR Burger. It was later disclosed that Derrick's commitment to backing the national squad led him to part ways with his Yamaha LC5s motorcycle, fetching RM4,500, to secure airfare to Qatar.
Online observers lauded Derrick's profound allegiance to the Malaysian team, with some suggesting that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) should honor him for his dedication.
Despite Malaysia's eventual 3-3 draw against South Korea, their journey in the Asian Cup was marred by losses to Bahrain and Jordan, dashing their hopes of advancing in the tournament. Nevertheless, the team's valiant performance against formidable opponents like South Korea, where they managed to hold them to a draw, was widely regarded as an impressive feat.
Coach Kim Pan Gon praised the team's resilience during the intense match, emphasizing their ability to rebound in the second half. However, South Korea's coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, expressed dissatisfaction with the referee's decisions, particularly regarding the awarding of two goals to Malaysia.
Despite the outcome, congratulations were extended to Harimau Malaya for their remarkable display, with hopes expressed for their success in future endeavors, including their quest to qualify for the World Cup.
