KK Super Mart files lawsuit against supplier of socks featuring the term 'Allah'

KK Super Mart & Superstore Sdn Bhd (KK Super Mart) has initiated legal action against Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd for allegedly harming its business by supplying socks featuring the word 'Allah'.

The lawsuit was filed at the Shah Alam High Court today, naming the company and its director, Soh Chin Huat, as defendants.

As the sole plaintiff, KK Super Mart asserted that the defendants failed to inform or notify them in any way that the barcode used for sales at the plaintiff's premises would be for socks labeled with the term 'Allah'.

The plaintiff argued that it would not permit the sale of such items as it would violate the contract and contravene the law.

KK Super Mart claimed that the defendants negligently or recklessly allowed the socks to be placed at the plaintiff's Bandar Sunway outlet, resulting in losses for the plaintiff.

"The defendants' primary aim in unlawfully interfering with the plaintiff's business was to tarnish the plaintiff's reputation in the business community and thwart the plaintiff's plan for a proposed listing of KK Mart through an Initial Public Offering (IPO)," the lawsuit stated.

"The defendants' actions led to sabotage of the plaintiff's legitimate business. Consequently, there was a nationwide public boycott of the plaintiff's outlets, accompanied by numerous hate messages, threats of violence, and negative social media comments from hundreds of thousands of individuals."

"This rendered the plaintiff unable to conduct business reasonably in Malaysia, resulting in irretrievable harm, loss, and damage," it claimed.

The company seeks the court to assess the actual loss, including the loss of profits, amounting to an average of RM1.5 million per week. Additionally, it seeks RM10.5 million for damage to its brand name and goodwill in the market, as well as RM20.3 million due to the canceled proposed listing (IPO) on the stock exchange.
