Convicted, Syed Saddiq received a RM10 million fine and a seven-year prison sentence
Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman was found guilty of embezzling money from Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada), the youth wing of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, of which he had been chief three years prior. As a result, the High Court today sentenced him to seven years in prison, two canings, and a RM10 million fine.
When deciding on the sentencing, High Court Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid stated that he had taken into account all of the mitigation arguments made by the prosecution and defense, including those related to the accused's and the public's interests.
"In my opinion, the following punishment is suitable and commensurate to the convictions:
"Thirteen years in prison and one caning for the abetment."
"Two years in prison and one caning for the criminal breach of trust."
In rendering his decision, he declared, "A jail term of two years each to run concurrently for the money laundering offence."
Azhar also threatened to imprison Syed Saddiq for an extra two years if he didn't pay the fine.
Later, Syed Saddiq was granted a stay of execution of his sentence by the High Court while his appeal was pending.
Syed Saddiq was found guilty earlier today of all four counts of aiding and abetting criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriating assets, and money laundering pertaining to the aforementioned Armada funds.
