17-Year-Old Leaps from Penang Bridge Due to Apprehension Over Facing Scolding Following Two Failures in JPJ Theory Test
Adversity, as the saying goes, builds resilience and strength. Life inevitably presents us with challenges and failures, experiences that, though painful, are essential for personal growth and wisdom, akin to a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly.
Yet, there are moments of vulnerability that can overwhelm us. Driven by the fear of reprimand, a 17-year-old leaped from the Penang Bridge into the sea after facing two consecutive failures in her JPJ Theory Test, commonly known as the Undang test among locals. Remarkably, she possessed swimming skills and immediately utilized them upon entering the water. Unfortunately, she became trapped in a swamp near the port and remained stranded for two days before rescue.
The ordeal she endured, facing cold and hunger before her discovery, is unimaginable.
According to the Penang Fire & Rescue Department's statement, the teenager abandoned her motorcycle on the bridge on December 21 at around 11 in the morning before taking the drastic step.
Over the 45-hour period preceding her rescue, she attempted to signal for help by waving her hand, yet her efforts went unnoticed. Fortunately, vigilant firefighters spotted the distressed teen clinging to a tree, and a rescue ensued.
The police notified the Penang Fire and Rescue Department at 10:25 am on December 23 that the girl had been found at the Penang port around 9:00 am. Despite her weakened state, the most important aspect was that she survived the harrowing experience.
