Zii Jia Sets Sights on Olympic Gold in Paris

National badminton player Lee Zii Jia is determined to clinch a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. As the former All England champion, he will be Malaysia's sole representative in the men's singles tournament in Paris.

"I'm not aiming just to qualify for the Olympics; my goal is to win," he asserted in an audio clip shared on Team LZJ's official X account. "I believe I have the potential to win, but I acknowledge that I still face challenges with my performance."

Ranked No. 10 globally, Zii Jia expressed that his focus isn't on merely qualifying but on securing the gold medal. This upcoming Olympics marks his second qualification for the games.

Notably, Zii Jia joins the ranks of Malaysian badminton history alongside former world No. 1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei as the only Malaysian shuttler to qualify for multiple Olympics. Lee participated in four Olympic games: Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio de Janeiro 2016.

In the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Zii Jia reached the round of 16 but was eliminated after a three-set match against China's Cheng Long.

Apart from Zii Jia, other Malaysian shuttlers who have secured berths in the Paris Olympics include Goh Jin Wei (women's singles), Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (men's doubles), Pearly Tan-M Thinaah (women's doubles), and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles).

Expressing empathy for Malaysia's No. 2 shuttler, Ng Tze Yong, who missed out on qualifying due to injury, Zii Jia expressed hopes of staying injury-free and performing at his peak for the upcoming Olympics.

The Paris Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11.
