"‘Why So Little?!’ — Malaysian Woman Complains About Receiving Only RM120 in Wedding Angpow"

For festive occasions like weddings, angpows (red packets) are traditionally given to newlyweds as a gesture of congratulations and well-wishing for a long and happy marriage. However, some people are never satisfied with the amount they receive, as demonstrated by a woman who voiced her frustration on social media.

Malaysian Woman Expresses Frustration Over Receiving Only RM120 in Wedding Angpow

In a lengthy post shared on XUAN Play, the woman explained that she had initially planned to get married four years ago, but her plans were derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Finally able to proceed with her wedding in 2024, she chose a garden setting over a beach venue, which she found "too remote." However, she encountered another challenge: the cost of goods had significantly increased post-pandemic, with prices for everything from wedding banquets to bridal photography doubling or even tripling.

The woman then addressed the amount of angpow money she received, which led her to question the loyalty of her so-called "true" friends. She had invited 100 people she considered "VIPs" but was disappointed when her generosity wasn’t reciprocated.

The issue? She claimed that her colleagues gave her only RM120 in angpow money, an amount she found unacceptable.

“HELLO! It’s 2024! Is there still a banquet that costs RM120 per person? Do you think it’s still 20 years ago? We still have to pay 16% tax and cover the cost of alcohol. Did you think my wedding banquet is cheaper than eating at Haidilao? I’m sure even a meal there costs more than RM120,” she wrote.

Upset by the amount, the woman decided to distance herself from her colleagues, criticizing those who attended her wedding despite not being able to afford it.

“If it were a fresh graduate, I might understand. But have you ever thought about why the bride should lose money for you? If you can’t afford it, don’t attend. After all, it’s my hard-earned money and I invited you because I considered you to be a VIP. How would you feel if I only gave RM120 at your wedding? It’s 2024, please wake up!” she fumed at the end of the post.
