This Rare New Durian Variant Costs Up to RM1K and is Set to Rival Musang King’s Popularity
As delicious as it is, how much are you willing to pay for a rare durian?
With the ongoing durian season, exotic fruit enthusiasts are on the lookout for the king of fruits, and some are willing to pay a premium to satisfy their cravings. While you might be familiar with Musang King, Black Thorn, and D24, you may not have heard of Tupai King—and you might be surprised at its price.
One Tupai King durian can cost up to RM1,000!
In a Facebook video by Buza Biz, Penang durian vendor Brian Ong explains that a Tupai King durian typically weighs around 3 kg and is priced between RM600 and RM1,000, depending on the fruit’s condition and freshness.
But why does one durian cost between three and four figures?
Simply put, Tupai King durians are quite rare in Malaysia.
"Tupai King durians are not always available in the Malaysian market, and their production is much lower compared to other durians," Brian explained.
Also known as D214, Brian shared some tips for durian enthusiasts on how to identify a real Tupai King to avoid being deceived by vendors selling D24 at Tupai King prices.
"The flesh is mainly yellow with a hint of green and is full of fat. The aroma is as strong as Musang King's but with a bit of bitterness."
In Penang, Tupai King was officially registered as a durian variant in February 2024, and it is expected to challenge Musang King’s popularity.
