PAS Criticizes Selangor Chinese School for Beer Company Sponsorship, Calling It 'Unhealthy' and 'Immoral'

A Chinese school in Sepang recently held a charity performance and fundraising event sponsored by a beer company, attracting significant attention from certain political parties.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) announced they are investigating the matter. Meanwhile, the Malaysian Islamic Political Party (PAS) voiced strong opinions through an official statement on Facebook.

“It violates the circular set by the MOE! It’s unhealthy and immoral for the education system,” said Haji Sabirin Marsono, Deputy Commissioner of PAS in Selangor.

Sabirin argued that the presence of alcohol taints the purity of the education system by involving, exhibiting, and promoting alcohol, which can be morally harmful, especially for school students.

“The involvement of liquor in school is a direct promotion of alcohol,” he added.

He also questioned the level of monitoring by the Ministry of Education and Culture over donation activities in schools, citing incidents like this as problematic.

Sabirin highlighted that the MOE's circular states that schools cannot accept donations from gambling, cigarettes, drugs, and liquor.

“It can affect the potential of students intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically,” he explained.

“You could’ve told everyone that it was against Islamic values”

Sabirin also criticized Datuk Aiman Athirah Al Jundi, a member of parliament (MP) for Sepang, who claimed she was unaware of the beer company's sponsorship until the event. According to Sabirin, the MP could have informed everyone about the issue, and they would have understood and respected her stance.

“The organizer would not have invited her on stage where she was seen holding the mock cheque with the beer company’s logo,” he said.
