MBJB Temporarily Shuts Down Mamak Restaurant After Couple Brings Dogs Inside

The Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) has temporarily closed a mamak restaurant in Bandar Cemerlang, Ulu Tiram, after photos of a couple dining with their pet dogs went viral.

According to the New Straits Times, Seri Alam district police chief Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the closure was ordered to facilitate cleaning at the restaurant. The restaurant owner filed a police report at the Ulu Tiram police station, denying allegations that pets are allowed on the premises.

“The case has been referred to MBJB and local authorities, and a closure notice has been issued to allow for cleaning,” said Mohd Sohaimi.

Photos circulating on social media show two people dining at the 24-hour restaurant at night, with their dogs sitting on chairs.

A Facebook user who posted the photos claimed she witnessed the incident and alerted the restaurant staff, but her concerns were ignored.

“When I confronted the couple, they said the restaurant owner allowed them to bring the dogs inside,” she said, criticizing the couple for disrespecting Islamic sensitivities.

The Facebook post went viral, sparking outrage among netizens who condemned the couple’s actions.

“This isn’t just about Muslim restaurants—most places don’t allow dogs unless they’re pet-friendly,” said one user.

Another commented, “I dislike restaurants that allow pets. If you want to bring your pet, choose a pet-friendly place where everyone can feel comfortable.”

A third added, “I wouldn’t even bring my cat out to eat. Just leave your pets at home; you’re not eating for that long.”

A Johor MCA councillor told China Press that MBJB has the authority to fine the couple involved.
