Malaysian Mother Wows by Ordering Food Fluently in Tamil at a Penang Shop
"Embracing bilingualism has been shown to enhance an individual's multitasking skills, attention span, problem-solving abilities, and even creative thinking. The advantages of speaking two or more languages become particularly apparent when it comes to everyday activities, such as ordering food.
In a recent TikTok post by user @lmk.88, she captured a remarkable moment when Masitah, the mother, confidently placed a food order in Tamil. What drew the attention of many netizens was Masitah's proficiency in the language.
Lyna disclosed that her paternal grandparents hailed from India, sharing the challenges her mother faced in communicating with them in Tamil, especially when they all lived together. Lyna went on to reveal how her mother, Mahsita, gradually learned Tamil from her grandmother. Interestingly, if asked about Mahsita's mother tongue, Lyna admitted it would be challenging to answer, given that their family converses in Tamil, English, and Malay at home.
“My mother encountered difficulties communicating with my grandparents in Tamil, especially when my grandmother was living with us. That's when she made the decision to learn the language.”
