Malaysia's Curry Puff Takes the 5th Spot Among the Top 100 Pastries Globally
The curry puff, a beloved pastry among Malaysians, is a delight with its flaky, crispy texture and a filling of savory curried potatoes, chicken, and onions. Its popularity is well-deserved, and it turns out, it has earned global recognition! Recently, the Curry Puff secured its place among the top 100 pastries in the world, according to Taste Atlas.
Taste Atlas has officially ranked the Curry Puff as the fifth-best pastry globally. In the fourth position is the Greek pie, bougatsa, known for its origins in a dough stuffed with various sweet and savory fillings. Italy's Focaccia di Recco col formaggio takes the sixth spot, with its roots traced back to the 12th century, as citizens of Recco supposedly prepared it for Crusaders using simple ingredients like flour, water, olive oil, and cheese.
Described as a flavorful snack, Taste Atlas highlights that Curry Puff was invented by Malays from the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. It is a popular breakfast item or afternoon snack found in various stores, bars, and markets. The simplicity and rich flavor of karipap have contributed to its popularity beyond Malaysia, especially in Thailand and Singapore.
While there are now numerous versions of the Curry Puff available, we are fortunate to savor and enjoy these delightful variations.
