Kuantan Resident Constructs Enormous Speed Bump Near Home, Leaving Malaysians Unimpressed
Kuantan Resident Constructs Enormous Speed Bump Near Home, Sparking Criticism from Malaysians Speed bumps, commonly referred to as bumpers in Malaysia, are “traffic calming” devices designed to slow down vehicles by using vertical deflection, thereby improving traffic safety. These are typically found in school zones and residential areas across the country. However, the size and construction of speed bumps can vary, and improperly built ones can potentially damage vehicles if not constructed according to Public Works Department specifications.
A striking example of this issue surfaced when a photo of an unusually large speed bump in a residential area of Kuantan, Pahang went viral. Shared by Putera Walid on the Warga Kuantan OFFICIAL Facebook page, the photo sparked a flurry of reactions from Malaysians.
The nighttime photo reveals a speed bump so tall that its peak appears higher than the front bumper of a pickup truck also visible in the image. In his caption, Putera Walid sarcastically noted, “This speed bump is still low. Hope the homeowner can increase the height to waist level… 😏”
The post did not include details on the speed bump's construction, but the caption suggested it was not built by the Public Works Department or the Kuantan City Council. A closer inspection of the photo indicated that the speed bump was likely constructed independently and did not adhere to proper specifications, as its width exceeded the road itself.
Malaysians were quick to express their disapproval in the comments. Many criticized the resident for creating a potentially hazardous obstacle for road users. One commenter urged nearby residents to report the speed bump to the Public Works Department, noting that proper approval is required for such constructions. Another commenter sarcastically suggested that the homeowner might as well build a wall instead of a speed bump, while others jested that an artificial hill or a chest-high speed bump would be the next logical step.
Overall, the incident highlighted concerns over unauthorized and improperly constructed speed bumps, emphasizing the need for adherence to official guidelines to ensure road safety.
