JPJ Launches European-Style Number Plates with Advanced Features for EVs & ZEVs
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has launched the JPJePlate, a specialized number plate designed for zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), including electric vehicles (EVs).
According to Malaysia Gazette, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook stated that the JPJePlate serves a dual purpose: to provide additional incentives promoting the use of ZEVs and EVs and to advance digitalization efforts.
“The JPJePlate initiative is part of the government’s commitment to enhancing digitization, boosting road safety, and revolutionizing the smart Vehicle Identification System (VIS),” he said.
“This initiative will be implemented for newly registered ZEVs, including new electric vehicles (EVs),” he added.
JPJePlate introduces new standards for road safety and efficiency, offering several benefits:
- Enhanced visibility: The retro-reflective features of JPJePlate improve nighttime visibility, enhancing road safety and supporting enforcement efforts.
- Security features: Equipped with an anti-cloning hologram, JPJePlate reduces the risk of theft and fraud. It also ensures EVs can be easily identified for proper safety protocols during emergencies.
- Smart technology and enforcement: Integrated with the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) via RFID technology, JPJePlate supports a more connected and intelligent transport network.
The plate features a white board with white lettering and a green stripe, symbolizing EV designation and displaying the Malaysian flag.
Existing ZEV owners are not required to adopt the JPJePlate, but those interested can purchase a set for RM98 starting in November, which includes the front and rear plates, an RFID mirror sticker, and standard delivery.
“Our priority is to ensure the smooth implementation of JPJePlate for new ZEVs. We encourage public feedback on this initiative,” the Minister added.
If the response is positive, authorities may consider expanding JPJePlate to other vehicle types in the future.
