Japan's Shinji Nakano Apologizes and Restricts IG Comments Following Offensive Messages from Malaysian Fans
Japanese track cyclist Shinji Nakano has issued an apology for his involvement in a collision with Malaysia's Shah Firdaus Sahrom during the keirin final at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, 11 August.
Although Shah Firdaus completed the race, he was later relegated from fourth to sixth place. The commissaire determined that the Malaysian rider was at fault for the crash due to moving "inside of the track when an opponent was already there."
In response, many Malaysian fans quickly took to social media to express their dissatisfaction, blaming Nakano for the incident and posting derogatory comments on his Instagram.
Nakano subsequently apologized on TikTok on 12 August, with his video garnering over a million views. "I apologize to all Malaysians for my mistake. Please do not mention my family's name. I should be responsible, and my family should not be involved," he stated.
Nakano has also restricted comments on his Instagram account due to the influx of rude and offensive messages from Malaysian users.
Many Malaysians have since condemned the online harassment, urging fans to show respect for all athletes.
