Japan Removes the Mount Fuji Barrier Just 3 Months After Installation
Japanese authorities have decided to remove the black mesh screen that had blocked a popular Mount Fuji photo spot in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture.
Mount Fuji, which majestically towers behind a Lawson convenience store in the town, attracted a surge of visitors seeking the perfect shot of the iconic volcano.
Initially erected in May, the barrier was intended to deter unruly tourists who were causing disturbances and disrupting the daily lives of locals. Many visitors disregarded smoking bans, littered, parked illegally, and even dashed into traffic to pose for photos at the popular spot.
The barrier was temporarily removed on 15 August due to safety concerns ahead of a typhoon, according to NHK World Japan.
Since its removal, no major issues have arisen. While some visitors still stop by, the number of tourists rushing into traffic has significantly decreased. As a result, the town has decided not to reinstall the screen for the time being.
However, security personnel continue to patrol the area to ensure safety.
"Depending on the situation, the screen may be put up again. We want to observe for a while before making a final decision. I hope people enjoy sightseeing and take photos of Mount Fuji from a safe location while following the rules," said a staff member of the Fujikawaguchiko Town Urban Development Division.
