Malaysians Stunned by Reports of Popular Japanese Clothing Store Allegedly Offering RM3k Basic Salary for Retail Associates
An X user recently posted a job listing from Uniqlo, one of Malaysia's top clothing chains, showing that retail associates are allegedly offered a basic salary of RM3,000 per month, plus a RM150 allowance.
According to the job requirements, retail associates must hold at least a Diploma, be proficient in English, and handle daily customer interactions.
The RM3,000 base salary reflects an increase from the previous rate of RM2,400 for retail associates in 2022, based on a past hiring post on X.
During the 2025 Budget presentation, the Prime Minister also announced a rise in the minimum wage, from RM1,500 to RM1,700, effective February 2025.
“It’s higher than an engineering graduate’s starting pay.”
Social media users were surprised by Uniqlo's wage offer, with many commenting that a retail associate’s basic salary now surpasses what they themselves earn.
“The base salary is even higher than mine, and I’ve been in my job for over 10 years.”
“For those with degrees earning less than this, it may be time to explore other options. It’s a sign that your workplace might be undervaluing your contributions.”
“That’s quite a bit for a Uniqlo part-timer. Cotton On only pays RM8 an hour."
“This beats an engineering graduate’s starting pay—well done, Uniqlo!”
