‘Based on My Skills & Qualification’ – Malaysian Diploma Fresh Graduates Now Expecting Up to RM6K Starting Salary

With the cost of living on the rise, it's understandable that everyone, including fresh graduates, would want a reasonable starting salary. But at what point does that amount become excessive?

In a TikTok video by @umpsamalaysia, fresh graduates were asked about their ideal basic salary when they first enter the workforce. Responses varied, with most expecting at least RM3,000, though two respondents felt RM2,500 would be a reasonable starting point. Some, however, expressed a preference for salaries as high as RM5,000 to RM6,000, believing their qualifications and university experience justified it—even among Diploma holders.

Others linked their expectations to the current economic conditions.

Recently, during the Budget 2025 announcement, PMX confirmed that the minimum wage would be raised from RM1,500 to RM1,700 starting February 2025.

Unrealistic expectations?

The reactions on social media were mixed, with many users taken aback by the high salary expectations. Some felt that paying more than RM3,000 to fresh grads was excessive:

“Diploma grads expecting RM5,000 is unreasonable.”

“Fresh grads asking for RM6,000?”

“If you don’t have experience, RM1,500 is enough. Work for a year, then get an increment.”

“Reality isn’t as rosy as this video makes it seem.”

“These grads need a reality check.”

“It’s possible but requires job-hopping over the years.”

“Start at RM1,700. It’s important to first experience working life.”
