‘I'll Bring My Kancil’ – Malaysians Organize Local Car Gathering at Mont Kiara Mall Following Viral Review Criticizing B40 Visitors
A Google review from a local guide recently went viral for expressing disdain toward Malaysian-made cars at a Mont Kiara mall in Kuala Lumpur. The reviewer bluntly stated, "Hopefully, the B40 won’t patronize this mall," sparking a wave of social media backlash. Many users also examined the local guide’s past reviews, which were largely unfavorable.
To clarify, Google local guides are part of a global network that contributes reviews to Google Maps to help others discover new places.
The review struck a nerve with Malaysians, particularly those who perceived it as a classist comment, singling out drivers of Malaysian brands Perodua and Proton. The reviewer expressed concern over frequently seeing these cars at the mall, which many interpreted as a slight against B40 income group visitors.
In response, social media users, including Perodua and Proton drivers, have rallied, planning a gathering at the mall to proudly showcase their local cars. Many pointed out that plenty of affluent Malaysians drive Perodua or Proton cars on weekends.
Comments on social media reflect this sentiment:
“Alright, I’ll show up with my second-generation Myvi—it’s just a short drive from Hartamas.”
“163 Retail Park is great! Lots of things to do. And yes, I went there with my Perodua.”
“If he spotted my yellow Viva, he’d probably take a picture and make it viral.”
Malaysian TV host Daphne Iking, who drives both Proton and Perodua, also weighed in on the local guide's remarks, adding her perspective to the conversation.
