Food Poisoning at Gombak School Program Sickens 82 and Kills 2, Including 19-Month-Old Girl
The Selangor State Health Department (JKNS) has confirmed that 82 out of 247 people experienced severe food poisoning symptoms after eating breakfast at an Islamic Charity Skills Program (Kamil) across the Gombak district on Saturday, June 8.
Tragically, the incident claimed the lives of a 17-year-old boy and a 19-month-old girl.
In a statement, JKNS State Health Director Dr. Ummi Kalthom Shamsudin indicated that the food poisoning is suspected to have been caused by fried bee hoon and egg yolks that had changed in appearance and taste.
It is reported that 30 primary schools in the district participated in Kamil, with food provided by an outside operator.
Dr. Ummi explained that those affected included secretaries, teachers, school workers, and family members.
“The main symptoms reported are diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, vomiting, and nausea. A total of 28 cases have received outpatient treatment, and no cases have been admitted to wards,” she said.
“Two cases resulted in death without receiving treatment from any health facility, involving a 17-year-old boy and a 19-month-old girl. Both victims ate food believed to have been brought home by family members.”
JKNS is continuing investigations to identify new cases and is implementing control and prevention measures. Food samples from the incident have been sent to the National Public Health Laboratory (MKAK) in Sungai Buloh to determine the exact cause of the poisoning.
“JKNS urges affected individuals who experience symptoms to seek treatment at any health facility immediately to prevent complications. Program organizers and the public should be cautious in selecting clean premises and food suppliers.”
“JKNS also expresses its condolences to the families of the victims,” she added.
