Proposed citizenship amendments are being criticized, but PM Anwar says the government must respect the views of the Rulers and will provide backbenchers with an explanation
According to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the government would clarify to the backbenchers the proposed constitutional modifications regarding citizenship.
This, he explained, was because the Conference of Rulers had been provided with the proposed revisions.
"Our capabilities are limited. Any constitutional amendment pertaining to citizenship must be approved by the Conference of Rulers following the talks.
We will have to respect the position that the Rulers Conference has established. After presiding today's Malaysia Digital Expo 2023 Grand Finale at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec), he told reporters, "We need to explain to the backbenchers.
A few backbenchers, such as Member of Parliament Howard Lee from Ipoh Timur, had expressed their displeasure with the proposed modifications on social media.
The Malaysian government intends to propose constitutional amendments that would address the citizenship issues that Malaysian women with foreign spouses face when their children are born abroad.
Anwar said that he would leave it up to the Speaker, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, when he was questioned about the possibility of publishing the names of lawmakers who did not attend legislative sessions.
In a separate incident, the prime minister urged all parties to avoid politicising the Israeli-Palestinian problem and to avoid misleading the people for political purposes, particularly when it comes to issues involving humanitarian aid.
He stated that the Malaysian government has already taken a number of choices on the subject and that Malaysia is one of the nations that has quickly received permission to provide humanitarian aid to Palestine via the border between Egypt and Gaza.
Anwar explained that it was just not suitable to politicise some government activities or things since they cannot be publicised for specific reasons.
