Merit-Based Matriculation: PMX Ensures Guaranteed Spots for All Top SPM Scorers, Irrespective of Race
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today that starting this year, the government guarantees that top Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) scorers will be offered a spot in Matriculation.
Speaking at the National Training Week (NTW) 2024 in Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Anwar stated that students who achieve 10As and above in SPM and apply for higher education will be given a Matriculation spot, regardless of race or background.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) will collaborate on implementing this initiative.
The Prime Minister emphasized that this initiative aims to ensure all top SPM scorers have the best opportunities to further their studies while maintaining the Bumiputera quota system for the MOE Matriculation system.
Anwar assured that the government will continue to improve education access and quality, safeguarding both the Bumiputera quota and the meritocracy principle for all students' benefit.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek will announce further details of this decision, which recognizes student excellence and promotes fairness in the education system, tomorrow.
Anwar stressed that while this decision is significant, more must be done to ensure fair opportunities for children, especially those from urban poor, rural, or interior areas, requiring cooperation from the ministry, private sector, NGOs, scholars, and academia.
