MCMC Probes IPTA Student with 100k 'X' Followers for Selling Explicit Content at RM150
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a case involving a public university student (IPTA) accused of selling explicit videos of himself on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
According to BERNAMA, MCMC revealed that the male student’s activities were discovered through monitoring and intelligence efforts based on public complaints. His statement has since been recorded by the commission.
Activities traced back to 2021
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect began his activities in 2021 by re-uploading pornographic content from other users on the platform. Over time, his modus operandi shifted to creating and selling explicit videos of himself in sexual acts with women he knew. This gained him over 100,000 followers on the platform.
MCMC reported that the student used the sale of these videos as a source of income, earning up to RM3,000 monthly. Each video was priced at around RM150.
Evidence seized in Shah Alam
During an inspection at a location in Shah Alam, MCMC enforcement officers seized a mobile phone and a SIM card believed to have been used to upload the explicit content. A statement was also taken from a female friend of the suspect, a private university (IPTS) student.
Legal implications
MCMC emphasized that selling explicit videos is a violation of Section 233(2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA 1998). If found guilty, the suspect could face a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both.
