Malaysians Impressed by Non-Muslim Teacher Who Teaches Jawi in School and Writes the Script Beautifully
A video by a Malaysian teacher recently went viral after she shared how she teaches the Jawi script to her students, showcasing her handwriting on the whiteboard and various papers.
Malaysians were captivated by the video, not only because of her beautiful Jawi handwriting but also because the teacher, Loren Fren, a Christian from Sabah, defied stereotypes surrounding the Jawi script.
Non-Muslim Malaysian Teacher Goes Viral for Teaching Jawi Script
At the time of writing, the video has amassed over 1.1 million views and more than 19,100 likes on Facebook.
In the video, Loren is seen writing Jawi script on the whiteboard, specifically demonstrating how the Malay proverb "Bagai aur dengan tebing" is written in Jawi. She also displayed several sheets of paper featuring her clear and elegant Jawi handwriting.
The overlaid text in the video read, "Teaching Jawi script this morning." In the caption, Loren explained:
"It’s not often that I teach Jawi script, so I made a video to commemorate the moment. Done with the Jawi topic this year, and will continue next year... For those who may not know, since 2020, Jawi script has been included in the Bahasa Melayu curriculum for Year 4 students and will continue until Year 6 to enrich their knowledge of Malay art, heritage, and history."
Loren emphasized that as Malaysians, we should at least have some knowledge of this historical script, urging people not to hold negative views about Jawi.
Malaysia's Former Education Minister Praises Loren
Loren's video even caught the attention of former Education Minister Dr. Maszlee Malik, who praised her in the comments for her respect and appreciation of Malaysian culture.
Many commenters also commended Loren for her beautiful handwriting and for embodying the true spirit of a dedicated Malaysian educator.
