Malaysian Surprised by the Scant Ingredients in Johor Stall's RM27 Seafood Soup
In the current climate of escalating food prices due to inflation, affordable meals are becoming increasingly elusive. A social media user recently took to Facebook to voice dissatisfaction regarding the meager ingredients in a bowl of seafood soup, priced exorbitantly at RM27.
The user, posting a series of videos on the 吃的平台 (Food Platform) Facebook group last Saturday (Jan 20), showcased the disappointing contents of the seafood soup ordered from a stall in Taman Pelangi, Johor. In one video, the user stirred the soup with a ladle to emphasize the perceived stinginess in ingredient portions.
To provide a clearer view, the user extracted the ingredients from the soup, revealing only one prawn, a handful of lettuce stalks, a small fish slice, and a few unimpressive squid pieces. In the comment section, the user shared the disbelief at receiving such paltry ingredients after ordering a medium-sized portion of seafood soup.
Inquiring with a staff member, the user confirmed that the seafood soup was indeed priced at RM27. Expressing concern over sharing one prawn between two people, the user questioned the validity of the portion size.
Netizens in the comment section echoed the disbelief, expressing shock at the RM27 price tag for such a minimal amount of ingredients. Some humorously remarked on the profitability of running a food business and questioned if the soup resembled someone's leftovers. One user quipped about the comparative affordability, stating, "It's not even S$9 (approx. RM31). Cheap."
