Iran Fires Over 180 Ballistic Missiles at Israel
Israel has accused Iran of launching over 180 missiles in a large-scale attack that has further raised concerns about a potential regional war. Millions of Israelis sought shelter as explosions illuminated the night skies over Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Palestinian officials reported that a man was killed by falling debris from a missile in Jericho, located in the occupied West Bank.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Iran’s actions, calling it a "big mistake" and warning that Iran would "pay for it." Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that 200 missiles, including hypersonic weapons, were launched in retaliation for the deaths of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed the strikes were in response to these killings.
In the aftermath, Israel resumed air strikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Beirut, while U.S. President Joe Biden stated that the Iranian attack was “defeated and ineffective.” The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed that American forces had assisted in intercepting the missiles.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that most of the missiles were intercepted by Israel and a U.S.-led defensive coalition. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern about the escalating conflict and called for a ceasefire.
International allies, including the UK, France, Japan, and Australia, expressed support for Israel. Israel’s military also launched an invasion into southern Lebanon to eliminate Hezbollah targets after months of hostilities. Air raid sirens sounded across Israel, and missile defense systems intercepted many of the missiles. Despite some hits in central and southern Israel, the majority were neutralized.
Iran's chief of staff, Maj Gen Mohammad Bagheri, warned that further attacks could target Israeli infrastructure, while the IRGC stated that the missile barrage was in retaliation for the assassination of key figures such as Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah's Hassan Nasrallah.
The situation has further strained the already volatile region, with Iran’s "Axis of Resistance" threatening more action and Israel maintaining a high state of readiness.
