Founder of Malaysian Brand Expresses Guilt Wearing 'Inexpensive' RM1.2k Hijab Alongside RM5.2k Shoes
The recent TikTok post from a local fashion brand founder has sparked criticism from Malaysians online after she shared a video of herself shopping for new shoes.
Haliza Maysuri, the entrepreneur behind the Muslimah fashion brand Bawal Exclusive, known for predominantly selling hijabs, faced controversy earlier by asserting that the hijabs her company offers are 'affordable' despite being priced up to RM1,200.
Her latest TikTok video appears to further fuel this contentious claim. While purchasing high-heel shoes valued at RM5,290, Haliza expressed guilt about wearing the supposedly inexpensive RM1,200 hijab.
At the time of writing, the video has garnered over 1.1 million views and more than 13,100 likes. In the video's overlaid text, the Bawal Exclusive founder stated, "I feel guilty wearing this cheap RM1,200 hijab because the pair of shoes I put on my feet is worth RM5,290. Whereas, a hijab is something we put on our heads."
Despite this sentiment, the video depicts Haliza buying at least a couple of pairs of the RM5,290 high-heel shoes and other footwear from an undisclosed store.
In the comments section, numerous Malaysians criticized the fashion brand founder for what they perceived as a 'humble brag' and for flaunting her affluence. Some labeled her as a show-off, with one netizen questioning the necessity of announcing the expensive items she's purchasing. Additionally, a commenter humorously remarked that the RM5,290 pair of high heels Haliza bought looks exactly like a pair worth RM13.90 that they own.
