Elephant Mother Patiently Awaits Perhilitan's Rescue of Her Calf Stuck in a Drain in Kelantan
Remember the remarkable rescue operation by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) in May, where they freed a wild elephant trapped in a ditch along the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway?
Recently, Perhilitan faced a similar situation as they conducted another rescue, this time involving an elephant calf stuck in a drain near Jeli. The calf was trapped in a roadside ditch while its mother patiently awaited its rescue.
Perhilitan Rescues Elephant Calf from Drain in Kelantan as Mother Waits Patiently
On their official Facebook page, Perhilitan shared a video of the rescue, which occurred on June 30 in Batu 13, Jeli East-West Highway, Kelantan. According to the caption, eight personnel from the Perhilitan Jeli District office were involved in the operation.
The video begins with an adult female elephant standing by the drain, watching over her calf stuck inside. Two Perhilitan personnel then secure a harness around the calf, and a backhoe is used to successfully pull it out.
Throughout the rescue, the mother elephant remained calm and did not act aggressively toward the Perhilitan team, seemingly understanding their intention to help her calf.
Perhilitan Cuts Road Barrier for Elephant Calf to Reunite with Mother
After freeing the calf, the mother and baby began to cross the road. However, the calf was too small to get over the road barrier like its mother. In response, Perhilitan cut the barrier, allowing the calf to reach the greeneries on the other side and rejoin its mother.
