Ambitious 24-Year-Old Graduate from USM with Visual Impairment Aspires to Pursue Career as a Braille Book Translator
If you possess unwavering determination, nothing can obstruct your path, and this young man serves as a perfect illustration. Rishan Ponraj, a recent graduate with a bachelor's degree in English language from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and an individual with disabilities, is embarking on an exciting journey to become a Braille book translator.
Harian Metro reports that this 24-year-old Malaysian not only excels academically but also serves as an inspiration for overcoming physical challenges. Rishan has dealt with cataracts and glaucoma since birth, adversities that might have deterred most people from pursuing their dreams.
However, with an indomitable spirit, Rishan not only excelled in his studies but also secured the top spot in a Braille reading competition during his time at USM.
Rishan faced significant challenges, not only in his studies but also navigating the disruptions caused by COVID-19 when he began university. Nevertheless, he handled it adeptly.
It wasn't until his final year that Rishan experienced the traditional on-campus learning environment, thanks to carefully crafted SOPs that allowed him to trade pixels for real faces in the classroom.
Rishan also highlights technological advancements that have made learning more accessible for visually impaired individuals. Equipped with the latest technology, including computers, laptops, voice-guided devices, and screen reader apps, he tackled academic challenges with finesse.
When confronted with materials featuring diagrams, Rishan's friends played a crucial role, transforming visuals into formats compatible with his tools. Expressing gratitude, he said, "I am grateful to be surrounded by friends willing to assist by rewriting descriptions of the diagrams to make them compatible with the capabilities of the application. It touches my heart."
Beyond achieving academic milestones, Rishan offers down-to-earth advice for those facing similar hurdles. He encourages individuals with disabilities to seize opportunities for learning and adventure, emphasizing the various options available, especially in higher education.
For anyone with a passion for learning, Rishan advises, "If you have a passion for learning, don’t give up and always seek solutions when faced with problems because it will be the most valuable ‘lesson’ in life."
Here's to Rishan Ponraj – the individual who transformed obstacles into stepping stones and demonstrated that life's challenges are mere pit stops on the road to success.
