“Please, Give More Focus to Deepavali Decorations” – Malaysians Question Priority on Halloween Decor in Malls
With Deepavali just days away, Indians worldwide are preparing not only with prayers but also with traditional food and decorations.
In Malaysia, similar preparations are underway; however, many locals have voiced concerns over one issue: public spaces, especially shopping malls, seem to be prioritizing Halloween decorations over Deepavali.
It's ghouls over the festival of lights.
A Facebook user recently expressed frustration, noting how Halloween-themed displays have taken over public areas in Malaysia during Deepavali season.
"Since when was Halloween our culture? Hello, it's Deepavali season, not Halloween!" the user wrote, hoping to raise awareness about respecting local cultures and being sensitive to those celebrating Deepavali.
"Trying hard to be Western"
Social media users were also surprised by the emphasis on Halloween decor in public places, with many calling for more focus on Deepavali decorations while there's still time.
"They’re so busy enjoying the ghouls, but when they see paranormal activities, they run. Ridiculous.”
Another commented, “So many Malaysians trying hard to adopt Western customs but still eat with their hands.”
“It’s October. Malls should be decorated for Deepavali, not Halloween. Deepavali reflects Malaysian culture.”
“Why do our malls prioritize Halloween sales and decorations? Deepavali is so much closer to Malaysians' hearts. I don’t get the relevance of Halloween here; it’s a foreign custom,” added another user.
