Malaysian Advocates for Poor Couples to Limit Their Family Size, Aiming for Financial Stability Instead of Relying on Children for Income
Evidently, numerous disadvantaged families in Malaysia tend to deliberately have a large number of children with the hope that one of them will achieve wealth and provide for the entire family. The rationale behind this practice is that the more children they have, the greater the likelihood that one will succeed financially.
However, one Malaysian individual, who grew up in such circumstances, expressed dissatisfaction with this mindset. They took to the SecretsMY Twitter page anonymously to call out and urge parents to reconsider the idea of having many children solely for financial support in their old age.
The individual wrote, "Having grown up in a poor family with numerous children, I implore you to stop viewing your children as your source of income. By thinking this way, it's as if you consider your children to be your retirement plan."
They highlighted instances where parents scold their children for wanting toys or become disgruntled when they need financial support for school-related expenses. The individual emphasized that it's unfair to criticize children for not assisting with household chores while simultaneously expecting financial contributions from them.
Furthermore, they underscored the parental responsibility to provide for their children's needs, emphasizing that children aren't asking for money to engage in harmful activities like drug use. The individual criticized the phenomenon where parents suddenly treat their grown children well, expecting financial support and assistance with religious obligations, only to show favoritism based on financial contributions later in life.
Ultimately, the individual urged a shift away from this mindset and advocated for family planning. They emphasized the importance of contraception, particularly for financially struggling individuals, to prevent children from being born into challenging circumstances.
It's disheartening to realize that many children are raised with the expectation that their primary purpose is to financially support their parents, all while enduring difficult childhoods.
