MACC Chief Announces Recovery of Over RM25 Billion Linked to Corruption
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recovered over RM25 billion from corruption.
Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated that this amount was saved from RM87 billion worth of projects through the repatriation of stolen assets and the seizure of property from those involved in corruption.
He mentioned that the commission has repatriated about 70 percent of 1Malaysia Development Bhd's (1MDB) stolen assets, amounting to approximately RM29 billion.
To enhance their effectiveness, Azam said the MACC collaborates with relevant authorities such as the Inland Revenue Board, the Companies Commission of Malaysia, and Bank Negara Malaysia by sharing information and expertise.
"I would like to stress that we are not revenue collectors but enforcement agencies focused on the betterment of the country and monitoring corruption and abuse of power.
"For example, in smuggling cases, we will charge all involved and repatriate the stolen assets.
"I want to bring back the money for all of you, not for me."
