"I Only Make RM1k" – Malaysian YouTubers Struggle as Viewership Declines
YouTubers are often known for making significant income, especially if their content is well-crafted and resonates with the audience. However, a Malaysian YouTuber has pointed out that the situation has changed.
Malaysian YouTuber @Lin BigYong recently shared a discussion with fellow YouTubers Bryson and Dennis, noting that YouTube viewership appears to be declining. What was once a primary income source for many YouTubers seems to be less reliable now.
“You can’t make money from being a YouTuber alone today. It seems like many people don’t really watch YouTube anymore,” they said.
The video, titled “Fewer audiences on YouTube? Is it time to say goodbye?” explores this trend.
Bryson mentioned that his friends rarely watch YouTube videos nowadays, likely due to the plethora of other options available.
“In the meantime, many social media users, particularly girls, prefer Xiao Hong Shu (RED) and Instagram,” Dennis added.
The YouTubers agreed that most people who browse YouTube now are primarily interested in talk shows uploaded on the platform, often watching during lunch breaks or before bed.
As for the comedy skits that many YouTubers frequently post, they seem to be losing their audience.
“No one is really into the comedy skits anymore,” they observed.
The trio also highlighted other YouTubers who have quit the industry after realizing they couldn't sustain their careers due to the dwindling audience.
In the video, they candidly discussed their current earnings, which are likely much lower than expected.
“As for me, I can make at least RM1,000 a month,” one of them shared.
With such earnings, it's clear that being a YouTuber alone is no longer sufficient.
They also agreed that a few years ago, YouTube was a good source of income, but that is no longer the case today.
