Hannah Yeoh Calls for Consistency, Criticizes Peja's Remarks on Taylor Swift as a 'Missed Opportunity'
Today, March 9, marks the conclusion of Taylor Swift's exclusive Southeast Asian stop in Singapore. Spanning two weekends, the event attracted a considerable crowd of Swifties from the region, inadvertently providing a significant boost to the host nation's economy, as evident from our social media feeds.
Neighboring countries like Malaysia observe with envy, with former Minister of Youth and Sports, Faizal Azumu, also known as Peja, lamenting it as a "missed opportunity."
"It is indeed a missed opportunity. We have access to A-list artists and content through arrangements with ASM. We need to be more proactive in securing them. The substantial economic benefits transcend political considerations."
Netizens noted the irony, pointing out that Peja's coalition had previously protested when other international acts visited Malaysia.
Responding to Peja's remarks, current Minister of Sports and Youth, Hannah Yeoh, urged him to maintain consistency, highlighting the fundamental issues she had to address at Bukit Jalil Stadium upon assuming office.
"Glad that PN is now recognizing the benefits of concerts. Consistency is key; cease protesting."
"To jog Peja's memory, upon assuming control of SNBJ in December 2022, we addressed basic issues like purchasing canvas and resolving flooding to prevent using a dustpan during rain. These are essential tasks preceding the grand performances," she elaborated.
Yeoh's response indicates a shift in the government's stance towards hosting major acts, prompting netizens to voice their requests.
Forbes reported that Taylor Swift's tour is estimated by economists to contribute between SGD 300-400 million (RM1.054-1.405 billion) to Singapore's economy in Q1.
Contrary to speculation, advisory firm Sportswork Group Sdn Bhd clarified that Taylor Swift's concert was never offered to Malaysia.
