End of a Legacy: Reader's Digest UK Shuts Down After 86 Years
The beloved and widely embraced magazine, Reader's Digest, has ceased publication in the UK after an illustrious 86-year run.
The announcement came from the magazine's editor-in-chief, Eva Mackevic, who shared the news on her LinkedIn page.
"After 86 wonderful years, I am deeply saddened to announce that Reader's Digest UK has come to a close," Mackevic lamented.
She attributed the closure to financial strain, citing the challenging landscape of contemporary magazine publishing as a significant factor. "Regrettably, the company found itself unable to withstand the financial pressures of today's unforgiving magazine industry and has ceased operations," she elaborated.
Mackevic expressed gratitude to colleagues, writers, public relations representatives, and brands who contributed to the UK edition of the publication over the years.
She also addressed concerns regarding outstanding payments to writers, assuring them that efforts were underway to resolve the matter. "I have been assured that insolvency practitioners are actively communicating with all parties regarding the next steps. I genuinely hope for a smooth and expedient resolution for you," she stated.
Reader's Digest rose to prominence in the 1920s following its establishment in New York by DeWitt Wallace and Lila Wallace.
By 1929, the magazine boasted 290,000 subscribers and generated an annual income of USD 900,000.
The inaugural international edition launched in the UK in 1938.
By its 40th anniversary, Reader's Digest had expanded to encompass 40 international editions, published in 13 languages and Braille. At its zenith, the magazine held the distinction of being the highest-circulating periodical in several countries, including China, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, and Peru, amassing a total international circulation of 23 million.
