Crowd Protests Outside PM’s Office Over Inaction Against Escort Who Assaulted Disabled Driver
Regarding the incident involving the Johor regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim’s escort allegedly punching a deaf e-hailing driver, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated three weeks ago that they were still awaiting further instructions from the Attorney-General’s Department.
Frustrated by the lack of action, Lawyers for Liberty, along with a crowd of supporters, gathered outside the Prime Minister’s office in Putrajaya on September 5 to demand that Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim intervene. They also submitted a memorandum seeking justice for the deaf driver.
Lawyers for Liberty shared the protest on their X account, writing, “Happening now at PM’s office! We’ve gathered to demand justice for Ong Ing Keong.”
Protesters held up various signs expressing solidarity with the deaf driver, displaying messages such as:
- “Bullying is not the solution. Justice for OKU and the deaf!”
- “The safety of deaf drivers is our responsibility.”
- “Deaf drivers are also human. Provide justice!”
- “Deaf drivers, too, have the right to be respected and protected.”
There is hope that the authorities will push the Attorney-General’s Department to expedite the process and bring charges against the escort involved in the assault on the deaf driver.
